Setting Up a Tiki Room For Your Party
Successful parties almost always have a theme. A
theme holds the party together, gives the venue
a certain ambiance and becomes the core of the
party's music, décor and activities.
A
Tiki party should rightfully be celebrated in a
rich Polynesian setting, complete with Tiki
bars, Tiki equipment and island-inspired drinks.
Although Tiki originally referred to the concept
of Polynesian spirits guarding against evil,
these days, a mere mention of "Tiki" instantly
shifts everyone to party mode.
Tiki settings
A Tiki hut is a house-like structure designed
for large areas. The Tiki hut has to have a huge
Tiki bar, tables, seating areas and decking. The
ubiquitous thatched roofing is the indisputable
icon of any Tiki bar. With its fronds rustling
in the wind, it is a perfect representation of
the easygoing lifestyle of Pacific islanders.
This type of roofing is the best for tropical
climates, as it keeps heat and rain away.
The portable Tiki bar, on the other hand, is a
much smaller version, and may be comprised of a
short thatched roofing panel, a high table for
serving drinks and about three bamboo stools.
Simply gather 'round a few guests, turn up your
Jimmy Buffet music, serve some mean Mai Tais and
you're good to go.
Building a Tiki room
You can opt to build a Tiki room if there isn't
enough outdoor space where you live. Look online
for shops that sell portable Tiki bars, and
you'll surely find a model that would fit your
space perfectly. Don't forget the thatched roof
-- it's your passport to an authentic-looking
Tiki room.
Hang leis, ukeleles and tapas on the walls or
lay them on table surfaces; gather up existing
coffee tables and use sarongs as tablecloths for
an inexpensive Tiki touch. For serving drinks,
use coconut shells and Tiki mugs and top the
cocktails with a mini-umbrella or an orchid. Let
your imagination run wild. After all, the living
is always easy with Tiki.
