What are Tiki Totems?
Tiki
totems are actually constructed from cabbage
palms or the Sabal palm trees that grow
abundantly in Florida.
Carved into these huge trunks are the
faces of Tiki idols, usually featuring fearsome
expressions, with huge, wide-open mouths.
Traditionally, these sculptures were used to
drive away evil spirits. Today, they are used to
evoke an exotic and mysterious Polynesian touch
to your Tiki bar.
The Tiki idols are gods who play different
roles, and because of this, assume different
names. For instance, the god Ku is known as a
protector but at the same time can also be a
warrior god. Many Tiki enthusiasts now search
for remnants of Tiki bars of the past to use as
striking displays inside their homes or for
their own Tiki bar setups. These artifacts can
be found in thrift shops and flea markets across
the country.
Creating Tiki totems
The beauty of Tiki totems is that no two
artworks are alike. The artist draws inspiration
from within him and may also take suggestions
from you. This is why your Tiki totem pole will
have just the right personal touch, and you are
guaranteed not to find the exact same style
anywhere. You will also note that the Tiki totem
you will receive will be slightly different in
size, design and color from what is pictured
online. The quality of the sabal palm wood
enhances the Tiki design with its rich texture
and color. It is the perfect material for
woodcarving as extensive detail can be worked
into the timber, to give your Tiki totem a more
impressive quality.
Little-known fact about Tiki bars
Bamboo could understandably be expensive in
places where they aren't cultivated. This is why
manufacturers have tried ways to discover an
alternative to bamboo. An amazing material that
they have found to remarkably have the qualities
of bamboo is PVC, or polyvinyl chloride. This is
a hard-wearing synthetic resin that is made by
polymerizing vinyl chloride. It can be as sturdy
as bamboo and can likewise withstand extremes in
weather conditions. No detail should be left out
from your Tiki bar even if you've decided to try
PVC-made huts. They also have woven corners,
faux bamboo columns, and thatched roofs. You can
also order faux bamboo stools and shelves, and
you're all set for a huge Tiki party.
